"Robert "Mouseman" Thompson

Rare Burr Oak Fruit Bowl SOLD

Discover a rare piece of Mouseman woodenware with this exquisite early Robert "Mouseman" Thompson burr oak fruit bowl. Dating back to the 1930s or 1940s, this bowl is a testament to the craftsmanship of the renowned Mouseman workshop.

This fruit bowl stands out from the rest because of its excellent original condition, boasting a beautiful aged patina that enhances the natural burr patterns and characterful banding of the wood. Crafted from a single piece of burr oak, this bowl is a true testament to the skill of the Mouseman craftsman who made it.

Typical of bowls of the 1930s/1940s era, the signature mouse is carved on the outside of the bowl, a distinctive feature of early pieces (later bowls featured the mouse in the centre).

Measuring 9"/23.5cm in diameter, this bowl is smaller than later models, adding to its rarity and appeal.

Early Mouseman pieces, especially those made from burr oak, are highly valued by collectors. The difficulty in working with burr oak, coupled with a higher wastage rate, makes these items particularly scarce and desirable. This bowl not only showcases exceptional craftsmanship but also connects us to a time when Robert "Mouseman" Thompson was still alive, adding to its historical significance.

Three key features of this fruit bowl:

  • Hand made from a single piece of burr oak, which is particularly difficult to work.
  • Characterful aged patina enhanced by the natural patterns of the burr.
  • An early piece that connects today with a time when Robert "Mouseman" Thompson was alive.
