A 1940s or 1950s early Robert "Mouseman" Thompson Yorkshire oak joint stool with a leather latticework seat on chamfered octagonal supports, block feet and carved with a mouse signature.

The stool is in excellent original condition. The leather latticework is all original with a dark aged patina. Patches of the lighter butterscotch colour of the seat before patination build up are still evident between some of the straps, which adds to its visual appeal. The straps have suffered no damage, splits, tears, or repairs and are securely held on the oak frame. The seat itself is still nice and tight on the frame with only a little bit of stretching from use. The oak frame is solid and sturdy, no loose joints. There is a 2cm hairline fracture underneath one of the feet (see the last photo for detail) which extends up the side of the block approx 3cm. I have checked the depth into the wood itself and it is no more than 2mm at most. This does not affect the leg's integrity in any way. It's hardly noticeable on the side unless one looks for it. Nothing major, but needs pointing out. The colour is pleasantly medium fumed with an aged patina. Please view all the photographs for condition detail.

This dark aged patination of the seat is a good clue in deciding the age of this stool. Unlike later leatherwork, it is of a depth of colour only achieved over some seventy or so years.
The signature mouse is well carved in an animated pose, scampering up one of the legs. Dimensions are H38cm x W34cm x D27cm approx.

These stools, with their leather latticework seats, are popular with collectors and the visual appeal of this example is enhanced by the seat's dark aged patina.

To nourish and preserve the stool, the oak has been lightly waxed using Gilboy's polish, and the leather has been fed and conditioned by the same firm's leather cream. Both are 100% natural products used by top restorers and conservators.

All in all, a very collectable and usable early piece of Mouseman furniture, perfect as occasional seating for yourself or your vintage teddy bear.
