I have had the pleasure of handling a good number of "Mouseman" coffee tables over the years and I can honestly say this is among the best I have had for sale.

It is a 1956 Robert "Mouseman" Thompson Yorkshire oak two plank octagonal coffee table, the adzed top carved to one edge "Sylvia" and another edge "1956." The table top is pegged onto a cruciform base, adzed all over, not just the tabletop. One of the legs is carved with the trademark mouse signature.

It was made by Ken Almack (1932 - 2021) one of Robert Thompson's craftsmen, and younger brother of Mouseman craftsman, Colin (Beaverman) Almack (1930 - 1996).  At the age of fourteen Ken began his apprenticeship under Robert Thompson, then, in the early 1950s. he was "called up" for National Service in the Green Howards. After National Service, Ken returned to Kilburn as a craftsman, where he remained in employment with "Mouseman" for the rest of his working life. In 1957, Ken married his fiance, Sylvia, at St Mary's Church, Thirsk with Bob (wrenman) Hunter as his best man.

This coffee table, inscribed on two of the leading edges of the top with "Sylvia" and the date "1956," was made specially for his fiance in the year before their marriage. It is something special, made out of hours by a life-long "Mouseman" craftsman, who learned his skills directly from Robert Thompson himself. The table stayed in the family until I acquired it from Ken's estate. I like to use the phrase "the best of the best" when describing my stock, and with its quality and undisputed provenance, with its charming back story, this coffee table is exactly that.

If you are looking for best quality earlier Mouseman pieces with a unique story to tell, then look no further than Ken Almack's coffee table, truly made with love.

The table is in excellent condition with good patination, commensurate with its age. It is solid and sturdy, no loose joints, no cracks, chips, knocks, etc. The signature mouse is plump and well carved, scampering up one of the legs.

Dimensions are H46cm x tabletop W48cm x tabletop D48cm approx.

It has lightly cleaned and waxed to bring out the gorgeous honey colour of the table top and to nourish it. Please view all the photographs for condition detail.

The stool will be safely and securely packaged for fully insured shipping by my trusted professional antiques carrier.
