AN EARLY ROBERT "MOUSEMAN" THOMPSON PAIR OF BOOKENDS, DATED 1947, INSCRIBED TO JA

Here we have for sale a rare and early pair of fully adzed Robert "Mouseman" Thompson bookends, one bearing the date 1947, the other inscribed with the owner's initials "JA." Both sport the signature mouse in the earlier twisted scamper pose.

They are both in excellent original condition and have been given a very light clean and nourished and protected by the application of several coats of Gilboy's beeswax polish, which is a 100% organic and natural product. The grain has expanded in places on one and the same side of each bookend, which is commensurate with their age of nearly 80 years old  and the result of fluctuations in humidity and temperature in a domestic setting over a very long time. Nothing major, and the beeswax treatment that I have applied will feed the grain, but needs pointing out.

Colour is medium fumed with an aged patina. No nibbles or losses on the mice, which are pleasantly plump and very skillfully carved in the earlier lifelike twisted scamper pose.

It is clear from the matching grain and patination on each bookend, that this is a natural pair made from a single block of oak.

This pair of bookends were made as a 16th birthday gift to the owner "JA" in 1947 and remained in her family until January 2026, when I was given the opportunity to purchase them directly from her estate.

These earlier made bookends rarely come onto the market and I cannot find a single recorded example of any in recent years with a carved date.

Dimensions are H15.4cm x W34cm x D8.6cm approx.

These are highly desirable, highly collectable pieces of Mouseman.
They will be safely and securely packaged for tracked and fully insured shipping.
